Sri Lanka invites private investors to build industrial zones
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has invited private investors to build industrial zone in areas bordering expressways promising state land.
"We must capitalize on the benefits that Expressways bring by encouraging economic activities," Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.
"As such, I propose to encourage the private sector to partner with the government in creating private free trade zones along the expressway corridors.
"The Government will provide land for this purpose and will also provide electricity and water up to such zone..,"
The new administration is seeking to create up to a million jobs with private investment but its economic policies have caused concern due to high state spending and interventions done apparently without any study beforehand.
The 2017 budget however such intervention were less than in 2017. Key interventions included Soviet-style directed credit. (Colombo/Nov15/2016)
