Sri Lanka June tea exports down 9.5-pct
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s tea exports fell 9.5 percent or by 2.9 million kilos to 27.7 million kilos in June 2015 from a year ago, with most of the decline in tea bags and packets, brokers said.
Earnings from tea exports for June 2015 fell 17.7 percent or by 3.5 billion rupees to 16.3 billion rupees from the year before, Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said.
“Although tea in bulk have shown a marginal increase, tea bags and packeted teas have shown a negative growth in 2015,” they said.
In the January-June 2015 period, total exports were down by 5.9 million kilos to 151.5 million kilos from the same period in 2014.
“Here again tea in bulk have shown a gain vis-à-vis January – June 2014 whilst packeted tea and tea bags show a decrease,” the brokers said.
Total revenue too of 90.7 billion rupees for the first six months of 2015 how a “fairly significant” decrease of 13.3 billion rupees compared with January- June 2014, Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said..
Turkey has emerged as the largest importer for the January – June 2015 period followed by Russia and Iraq.
The United Arab Emirates too has shown a fairly significant increase in imports of Ceylon tea this year compared with 2014 with Iran, Azerbaijan and Kuwait being other noteworthy importers.
