Sri Lanka must look ahead; past two years belong to opposition: PM

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s government must move on from the past two years, which belong to the opposition, and look to the future, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

“The past two years belong to the opposition. The next three years belong to the government,” said Rajapaksa.

The premier was speaking at a ceremony commencing construction on the second phase of the Eastern terminal on Wednesday (12).

Calling the remaining three years of the current administration ‘crucial’, Rajapaksa must move forward despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We started projects such as Hambanthota port and the [Southern] expressway in wartime,” he said.

An unprecedented economic crisis and shortages in essential food items and cooking gas, power outages and a host of other issues amid a dollar crisis has resulted in the government’s popularity plummeting, analysts say.

The government, headed by his brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has had to contend with angry protests and unapologetic ridicule on social media as a result, with opposition parties attempting cash in on the crises. Opposition members and critics have accused the government of mismanagement and relentless money printing.

“Even now, we implemented the 100 roads development project and expressway projects. And now we are starting the development of the Colombo port,” said Rajapaksa.

“We must acknowledge that the situation we are in is deeper than the depth of this port. But despite the challenges the country must move forward,” he said. (Colombo/Jan12/2022)
