Sri Lanka opening batsman questioned over rape incident
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s controversial opening batsman Dhanushka Gunathilaka was questioned by police over a rape of a Norwegian woman in his hotel room, but is unlikely to face any criminal charges, official sources said Wednesday.
A statement was recorded from Gunathilaka, 27, after his friend Sandeep Jude Selliah, 26, was arrested in connection with the rape said to have been committed in his presence at the Movenpick hotel on Saturday night, a police officer said.
Gunathilaka is understood to have told police that he was unaware of what Selliah and the Norwegian woman did while he was also in the same room in the company of another Norwegian woman.
Gunathilaka could have faced an aiding-and-abetting charge, but police said evidence so far did not point to his direct involvement and he was not a person of interest in the criminal investigation.
Selliah was remanded in custody and is due to be taken before the Colombo magistrate on Thursday.
Selliah is a British passport-holder of Sri Lankan origin. Police said the Norwegian woman had already left the country after making the rape complaint.
Sri Lanka’s cricket board has already taken action against Gunathilaka for breaching team discipline and violating the code of conduct for players during a tournament. He has been taken off the five-match one-day international series against South Africa starting at Dambulla on Sunday. (COLOMBO, July 25, 2018)
