Sri Lanka plans tourism promotion blitz on digital media

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is planning to spend up to 500 million rupees on tourism promotion on digital media platforms, as the country targeting visitors from Europe and Asia, officials said.

Secretary to the ministry of tourism Sutheash Balasubramaniam said Sri Lanka hopes to spend around 300 to 500 million rupees on a ‘digital media campaign’ targeting Europe, India and China.

Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals grew only 3 percent in the first quarter with a daytime closure of the main airport for repairs

Tourism Minister John Amaratunga said he expected tourism earnings to grow to 4.0 billion rupees in 2017 from 3.5 billion US dollars in 2016.

Sri Lanka was also planning to settle unpaid bills to three international broadcasters to re-start advertising an official said.

Al Jazeera, Sky and Bloomberg is expected to pay paid 500,000 dollars in a bid to settle claims. (Colombo/Apr21/2017)
