Sri Lanka PM to raise fishery poaching issue with India’s Modi at virtual summit

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will raise the issue of poaching in northern seas by trawlers from India, during a virtual summit with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on Saturday, his office said.

Indian trawlers have increased poaching in Sri Lanka’s Northern waters after arrests of fishing boats was stopped during a Coronavirus pandemic, officials had said at a meeting at Prime Minister’s residence on Friday.

Some representatives of fisher societies from the North had complained to the PM that their livelihoods are affected due to the poachers.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa had undertaken to raise the issue at the virtual summit on Saturday, the statement said.

Sri Lanka’s Navy was also instructed to resume arrests of trawlers coming into Sri Lankan waters.
Indian trawlers fished in Sri Lanka’s northern waters at a time when war time restrictions blocked Sri Lankan fishermen.
