ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka police have arrested six more people who had allegedly attended the controversial celebrity birthday party at a five-star hotel in Colombo May 30 amid a COVID-19 lockdown.
Police spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said three men and three women were taken into custody on June 04 in connection with the event. The suspects will be produced in the Colombo Fort Magistrate Court, he said.
“All suspects arrested will be directed to a mandatory two weeks quarantine,” said Rohana.
Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) in the suspects’ respective areas will oversee their quarantining, he added.
The spokesman said that one more suspect has yet to be arrested based on information available to the police.
Police have so far arrested 21 people so far for attending event organiser Chandimal Jayasinghe’s birthday party, including model Piumi Hansamali.
A Facebook live video shared by Hansamali condemning a media interview with the police spokesman that led to her being sent to quarantine went viral this week.
Meanwhile, the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has taken over the investigation, said Rohana. (Colombo/June04/2021)
