ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka police have warned the public of an extortion racket carried out by an organised group posing as police officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) or other units.

Police spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said on June 09 the group is known for calling unsuspecting citizens’ landlines and telling them that police has evidence for their involvement in the 2019 Easter bombings.

According to Rohana, the alleged extortionists demand ransoms from the purported “suspects”.

“This is being carried out by organised criminals and certain prison inmates. Investigations are under way and we request the public not to respond to such calls,” said Rohana.

“Most of these calls are taken to landlines. We ask the public not to fall for such scams,” he added. (Colombo/June09/2021)
