Sri Lanka port container volumes up 6-pct, cross 5 mln mark
ECONOMYNEXT – Container volumes at Colombo, Sri Lanka’s main port, crossed the five million mark Monday, having increased by 5.9 percent to 4,742,652 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent container units) in the first eleven months of 2015.
The number of container ships increased 12.7 percent to 3,333 in 2015 from 2,957 in 2014, the Ministry of Ports and Shipping said in a statement.
“Transshipment container including re-stow throughput which accounts for 76.6 percent of the total Colombo volume has achieved a growth of 5.1 percent,” it said. “The domestic volume has also recorded a fair increase of 8.3 percent.”
The total cargo tonnage handled in the Port of Colombo during the first eleven months of 2015 rose 3.9 percent to 67 million tonnes from the previous year.
