Sri Lanka port workers call off strike over East Terminal
ECONOMYNEXT – A number of port worker unions have called off a strike launched against private investment into a container terminal following talks with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Representatives of the union met Prime Minister Rajapaksa in Tangalle.
Port worker unions are protesting a plan to get private investment to develop the East Container Terminal of the Colombo port.
Head of the Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya Prasanna Kalutharage was quoted in state media as saying that the strike was called off after assurance that the terminal will remain under Sri Lanka Port Authority.
The workers were protesting a plan to get foreign investment of 49 percent of the equity to develop the balance section of a partially completed terminal.
The workers worker demanding a written guarantee to stop the project, which was not given. (Colombo/Aug03/2020)
