ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has approved a proposal to increase the fuel quota allocated to threewheeler drivers to 10-litres from the current five-litre limit with effect from November 05, his office said.
The first phase will commence in the Western province and threewheel drivers will have to follow a registration process which will commence on November 01.
Other provinces will be included in stages, PMD said.
Last week, Power & Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara told parliament that the government was looking at ways to increase the fuel quota for commercial tuk drivers in the country.
However, he said there were 11 million threewheelers registered at the Motor Vehicle Department and the government is not able to increase the fuel quota for all of them.
According to registrations at provincial and divisional secretaries, the minister said, there are only 350,000 commercial tuk drivers in the country.
He said a registration process will be initiated to identify these drivers to include them in the QR system.
