ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered to remove all taxes imposed on imported sanitary materials and finished products to get zero VAT.
“All duties imposed on imported raw material for domestically manufactured sanitary napkins waived off and the importers of finished sanitary napkins will get zero rate VAT benefit,” President’s Media Department said in a statement.
“President directs the authorities to pass the benefit to consumers.”
Sri Lanka’s teachers’ unions and opposition legislators have said schoolgirls were absenting themselves as families prioritized food over other items.
A 15 percent customs duty, 10 percent CESS, and 10 percent port and airport levy on five key raw materials will be lifted.
Both domestically manufactured sanitary napkins and imports have been zero-rated for value-added tax.
Domestically made napkin packs of 10 which are selling for around 260-270 rupees are expected to be reduced by around 50 to 60 rupees and the price of imported ones by about 18 to 19 percent, the statement said. (Colombo/Oct02/2022)
