Sri Lanka rains, wind kill 13, 25,000 houses damaged
ECONOMYNEXT – Torrential rains and gusting winds from a tropical depression has left at least 13 people dead and 25,000 houses damaged in Sri Lanka, the countries disaster management office said.
Eight people died in Galle district in the South of the island, and missing people were revised down to 01.
Over 25,000 houses and 314 businesses were also damaged.
Sri Lanka was hit by Tropical cyclone Okchi, which passed south of the island with most of its activity in mid-ocean, and it has since veered towards the Arabian sea.
It developed into a severe cyclone, and equal to a category 02 hurricane, Accuweather.com, a global weather portal said.
Another depression is forming in the Bay of Bengal, which may reach mainland India this week.
