Sri Lanka receives medical aid worth one million dollars from Turkiye

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has received a donation of emergency medicines and other medical supplies worth one million US dollars by the government of Turkiye, formerly known as Turkey, a statement from Sri Lankan embassy in Ankara said.

The donation, urgently needed by hospitals in Sri Lanka, came in batches, first with a consignment of Filgrastim injections that were airlifted to Sri Lanka and received by the officials of the Ministry of Health on August 14.

The other batch is expected to reach Sri Lankan waters mid-September. Two containers of medicines and medical supplies left the Izmit Sea Port in Turkiye on August 17, the statement said.

Ambassador MRizvi Hassen and Ahmet Hamdi Camli, the chairman of Turkiye-Sri Lanka Parliamentarian Friendship Group, and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkiye held discussions in May with regard to Sri Lanka’s need for assistance in the health sector.

“Subsequently the Ministry of Health of Turkiye coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkiye and expedited dispatching the medical consignment with the approval of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkiye,” the statement said.

Thus far, Sri Lanka, going through a severe forex crisis, has received medical supplies and medicine from Thailand, Japan, Australia, Austria, India and Bangladesh. (Colombo/Aug23/2022)
