Sri Lanka records 30th Covid death a 23-year-old Colombo resident – Health Chief
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka recorded its 30th Covid 19 fatality late last night as the authorities scrambled to deal with an outbreak of the virus among inmates at the country’s biggest jail, Welikada where at least 30 positive cases have been detected, officials said.
The Director-General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunewardene confirmed late last night that a 23-year-old man warded at the National Institute for Infectious diseases in Angoda had passed away due to Covid 19.
A resident of Colombo 15, the youth had “complications due to diabetes” a press release issued through the Department of Government Information said.
The National Operations Centre for the Prevention of Covid 19 said this morning that a total of 400 new cases had been detected in the past 24 hours.
Yesterday a further 22 cases had been detected at the Welikada jail, an overcrowded facility housing more than 4,000 inmates.
