Sri Lanka seeks closer relations with Africa

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera, who will open an embassy during an official visit to Ethiopia, the headquarters of the African Union (AU), said the island is seeking closer ties with Africa.
Samaraweera had talks with Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament Abadula Gemeda at the Ethiopian Parliament in Addis Ababa, and was scheduled to call on President of Ethiopia Mulatu Teshome.

He explained the rationale behind Sri Lanka opening a resident diplomatic mission in Ethiopia, where Africa’s future lies, being the headquarters of the AU and the ‘Diplomatic Capital’ of Africa, a statement said.

Both discussed avenues for future cooperation between the two parliaments and pledged to work closely in strengthening longstanding friendly bilateral relations.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Ethiopia will help broaden political, trade and economic relations with Ethiopia, and forge closer relations with the African Union, the statement said.
