ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has sought 40 million US dollars in an interim damage claim from MV X-Press Pearl Ports Minister Rohith Abeygunewardene said as the ship which had over 800 tonnes of sodium hydroxide on board sinking off Colombo port emitting a grayish precipitate.
“We have sought a 40 million dollar interim damage claim,” Minister Abeygunewardene told reporters in Colombo.
“Five committee are assessing the longer term damage.”
Sri Lanka Marine Environmental Protection Agency said over 1000 tonnes of debris including plastic nurdles had been collected from the shores and they were packed in 44 containers.
“We may also collaborate with private companies to dispose of the waste ecologically and responsibly,” MEPA Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura said.
Satellite pictures showed a long tongue of grey sea stretching away from the ship.
The vessel was carrying over 40 containers of sodium hydroxide in its holds. (Colombo/June12/2021)
