Sri Lanka sees 180 train suicides in 2017
ECONOMYNEXT – In 2017, 180 persons had been killed after throwing themselves at trains to commit suicide while another 4 persons passengers had died by falling off trains, accidentally, official data showed.
In 2016 also 180 persons had committed suicide on rail track. In 2016 one passenger had fallen off a train and died.
In 2016 three people had died when trains were stoned, while 26 were injured. In 2017 there were no deaths but 17 had been injured.
In 2017 70 passengers had been injured by falling off trains (down from 75 a year earlier) and 260 people had been injured on tracks (up from 256).
It is illegal to travel on rail tracks. (Colombo/Sept7/2018)
