ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka may be able to contain its rapidly spreading delta variant-led COVID-19 epidemic if the government extends the ongoing lockdown by another week or two, State Minister of COVID Control Dr Sudarshini Fernadopulle said.
The lockdown, which was imposed on August 20, is scheduled to be lifted next Monday (06).
“The presidential task force will take a call on that. I personally believe it’s better to extend it by another week or two because the increase in cases hasn’t slowed down yet,” Fernandopulle told reporters on Wednesday (01).
“Research by Prof Neelika Malavige in Janauary showed that about 14% within the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area had tested positive but there were nine times as many cases in the community. Now, with delta, it may be even higher than that. When 5,000 cases are reported, there may actually be about 50,000, if not more,” she said.
Prof Malavige is Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Calls for an extension of the lockdown have been growing.
An independent group of experts convened by World Health Organisation (WHO) Sri Lanka last week said that, with nearly 90 percent of samples sequenced confirmed to be the deadly delta variant, extending Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 lockdown to September 18 and October 2 will save 7,500 and 10,000 lives respectively at an economic cost of 1.9 percent and 2.2 percent of GDP.
The group, which included Malavige, said the virus is now spreading within households and hospitals are at full capacity with health workers also getting infected as supplies including oxygen run critically low.
“The health system would have some time to recover from extreme pressure including shortage of beds and critical supplies like oxygen,” they said.
The experts called for “enforcement of stringent measures with compliance of the public to reinforce accelerated vaccination” and a “social support system for vulnerable population”.
Said Dr Fernandopulle: “I think if we impose movement restrictions for another week or two, we may be able to contain the spread to some extent.” (Colombo/Sep01/2021)
