ECONOMYNEXT – A Sri Lankan government agency is to do geotechnical studies on a proposed flood barrier on the Kelani river to prevent floods from damaging the capital Colombo and suburbs during the rainy season.
A statement said the government plans to build a flood embankment along the Kelani river from Hanwella up to the river mouth to mitigate the damage caused around the river basin by floods.
A geotechnical investigation has to be done before the construction of the proposed flood embankments.
The Cabinet of ministers this week approved a proposal by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources for the study to be done by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).
