Sri Lanka suicide bombings intelligence identified churches, Indian embassy as targets
ECONOMYNEXT – An intelligence alert about planned suicide bombing by Islamic extremists in Sri Lanka was issued just over a week before Easter Sunday’s attacks on churches and hotels.
The targets were Catholic churches and the Indian high commission, according to the warning.
The warning by Priyalal Dissanayake, Deputy Inspector General of Police was dated April 11, 2019, and addressed several security divisions, asking for heightened security of VIPs and senior government officials.
The letter was addressed to the Director/ Ministerial Security Division, Director/ Judicial security division, Director/ Retired presidents security Division, Acting Director/ Diplomatic security Division and Acting Director/ Retired presidents security Division.
It asked the recipients to give special attention to the warning and “inform your staff to provide special security measures to the areas covered by your division.”
