Sri Lanka suspends ship crew changes as new arrivals drive Coronavirus total over 2000
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has suspended ship crew changes after number of seamen tested positive for Coronavirus, Information Minister Bandula Gunewardene said with total reaching 2001 on June 25.
“We had allowed ship crews to come from another country and go to another country from our port,” Information Minister Bandula Gunewardene said.
“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said he had ordered the procedure to be halted.
“That is because a large number of those persons who came to Sri Lanka were identified as infected.”
He said a when a large number of persons from abroad are suddenly identified as having Coronavirus patients it creates pressure on hospitals.
On June 23, 40 persons from abroad tested positive for Coronavirus.
Gunewardene said Sri Lanka was also bringing foreign returnees and the process had to be done with care.
Sri Lanka had confirmed 2001 case up to 1000hours June 25 according to health ministry data. Of this 747 were foreign returnees (30 foreign nationals) and 941 were linked to a Navy base. Another 313 were from the community outside of the Navy persons.
The last person recorded from the community was from April 30. (Colombo/June25/2020)
