Sri Lanka to add 1,000MW of LNG power plants

ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lankan government has decided to add about 1,000 megawatts of power using liquefied natural gas as fuel, a spokesman said.

The Cabinet of ministers approved a proposal to add LNG to the fuel mix of the island’s power generating system, spokesman Minister of Land and Parliamentary Reforms Gayantha Karunathilaka said.

The policy proposal was put forward by a cabinet subcommittee chaired by Special Assignments Minister Sarath Amunugama.

Karunathilaka told a news conference the Cabinet has approved a proposal to add about 1,000 MW of LNG power plants by 2019 on a fast-track basis.

It also decided to build infrastructure to import and unload LNG in Sri Lanka also on a fast-track program, he said.
