ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has approved a project for a survey to find and assess gem deposits in the island.
About 70% of land in Sri Lanka is believed to be gem-bearing but only 10% of the deposits are mined, according to the proposal by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment.
The project to explore and assess gem deposits in Sri Lanka will be done during 2017-21.
It aims to build a database of gem deposits and introduce proper methods for gem mining, and prepare guidelines for a sustainable gem mining industry.
