Sri Lanka to give grants to build 14,000 houses for poor
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will give a grant of 600,000 rupees for 14,000 very poor families to build and repair houses, cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunewardene said.
“In the past credit was given for houses putting them in debt,” Minister Gunewardene said. “Under this program, very poor families will be given a grant.”
The cabinet of ministers had approved the proposal by the housing minister, he said.
The cost for 14,022 house will cost about 8.4 billion rupees.
The house owners will be given the funds on installments based on construction progress. (Colombo/Jan09/2020)
