ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has vaccinated 54.4 percent of the population by September 18, with 41.4 percent getting China’s Sinopharm, health ministry data showed, while 4.4 percent of the dying was vaccinated.
Sri Lanka had vaccinated 60.5 percent of the population or 13.7 million with one dose and 11.05 million with both doses.
Sinopharm is the top vaccine in use with 49.7 percent of the population getting their first dose with Sinopharm, 6.6 percent with AstraZeneca, 3.56 percent with Moderna and 1.1 percent with Pfizer.
The overwhelming majority of the dying were un-vaccinated. Deaths may occur due to the severity of the disease and the capability and availability of health resources to manage patients who develop severe disease.
Up to September 03, out of total deaths of 9,806 persons, 4.4 percent had got both doses of vaccines and 15.9 percent had one.
Unvaccinated persons were 79.7 percent of deaths.
Doctors had urged Sri Lankans to get vaccinated as soon as possible with whatever was first available on the principle that the ‘first available vaccine is the best one.’
Sri Lanka’s deaths have been falling over the last two weeks with a lockdown in effect as well as accelerated vaccination. (Colombo/Sept19/2021)
