Sri Lanka vaccinating tourist hotel workers, drivers, guides against Coronavirus

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is vaccinating tourist sector staff and regulatory officials against Coronavirus with over 17,000 registering so far, the island’s tourism promotion office said.

“Stakeholders of the tourism industry are now registering and sending in information to the program,” Sri Lanka Tourism said.

“All employees of the Safe and Secure certified hotel amounting to 12,503 employees have now registered.

“Along with the registered tour guides: 2737 and tourist drivers: 1816 who play a significant role in tourism industry will be receiving the jab to fight Covid-19.

“Moreover, all staff members of all four tourism institutions and the Ministry of Tourism totaling, 658 individuals are added to the program.”

Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson Kimarli Fernando said the tourism and health ministries are conducting the vaccination in a bid to move towards normalcy.

“Attaining a normalcy of operating like pre-pandemic times and uplifting the industry during these periods will have a positive impact on the country’s economy,” Dhammika Wijesinghe, Director General of Sri Lanka Tourism said.

“Thus far, the safety of our people is a core mandate; hence we look forward to working together with the respective ministries and the stakeholders to successfully conduct this action.”

Sri Lanka has already opened the country to tourists with multiple Coronavirus tests and a ‘bio bubble’ aimed at preventing contact with the local population.

Up to February 2021 5,048 tourists had arrived in the country of which only 9 were confirmed. (Colombo/Mar06/2021)
