Sri Lanka warned of surging swell waves in South and Western seas from FANI
ECONOMYNEXT – Fishermen and people living near the south and western seas have been warned of rough seas with so-called swell waves surging to 2.5 to 3.5 meters (11 feet) from a sever cyclone about 800 kilometers off the noth eastern shore.
Fishermen in the Northern, Eastern, South Eastern and Northwestern areas have been warned not to go to sea with winds as strong as 140 kilometres an hour expected.
But for seas of Mannar, Colombo, Galle to Pottuvil, warnings have been issued for high so-called ‘swell waves’ which surge due to long waves coming from distant storms, although there may not be high winds in the immediate vicinity.
Over land, strong winds of 60 kilometres per hour and rain of up to 100 millimetres have been predicted. (Colombo/May02/2019-SB)
