Sri Lanka’s Janashakthi Insurance chairman to retire

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Janashakthi Insurance PLC said incumbent non-executive chairman and director W. T. Ellawala is to announce his retirement at the annual general meeting on 31st of March 2016.

Ellawala joined Janashakthi as a director at the time of its inception in 1994.

He became non-executive chairman in 2005 and holds several corporate positions across diverse industries.

Ellawala noted that he had seen the firm grow from a small Life Insurance provider to one of Sri Lanka’s leading Insurance organizations.

“It has indeed been an extremely rewarding experience to have contributed to its expansion through a range of initiatives that included the acquisition of two Insurance companies, the National Insurance Corporation in 2001, and AIA General Insurance Lanka Limited as recently as in October 2015.”

C. T. A. Schaffter, founder of Janashakthi Insurance, said Ellawala played an “integral role” in shaping the company’s success.
