Sri Lanka’s Serendib Flour Mills to raise capacity by 50-pct

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Serendib Flour Mills will raise capacity by 50% to 1,500 MT a day by adding a new mill to meet rising domestic demand and exports.

New machinery for the 500 MT a day capacity mill will arrive at the beginning of April and it will take four months to commission the plant.

Mohamed Riyal, the new Chief Executive Officer of Serendib Flour Mills, said the existing plant was running at 90% capacity.

The firm, a joint venture between Al Ghurair Foods (AGF) and Emirates Trading Agency (ETA), will invest 12 million Swiss franc in the new mill, he told a news conference. 

The firm operates a milling facility at the Colombo Port with capacity to mill 1000 tonnes of wheat a day.

Riyal said the local flour market has grown by 25% in the last three years mainly because of the rise in rice prices owing to crop shortfalls that prompted consumers to switch to flour.
