ECONOMYNEXT – A group of Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested near Myanmar’s shores in February 2021 are to be brought back to Sri Lanka today (23) following rounds of talks with the Myanmar government, Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry said.
The fishermen will be flown in from Yangon, Myanmar, to Singapore on Singapore Airlines flight SQ761. From Singapore they will be flown to Colombo on Singapore Airlines flight SQ468, the ministry said in a statement today.
According to Sri Lankan media reports the fishermen were pardoned in a New Year amnesty on April 17.
As part of the amnesty, Myanmar has released 23,000 prisoners, reports said.
The released fishermen are A C I Fernando, L A Nirmitha Srilal, H S Chaminda, H S Jayantha, D K S S Hemachandra, D M K Madushanka, K M Fernando, S Nanayakkara, W N Fernando, T K N Peiris, J K S Lal Perera and W A S Fernando. (Colombo/Apr23/2021)
