Sri Lankan provincial councils hire more than 7,000 over approved cadre
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan provincial councils have employed more than 7,000 people in excess of their approved cadre, according to the 2018 first quarter report on public sector staff, a government spokesman said.
Gayantha Karunathileka, Minister of Land and Parliamentary Reforms, said that according to the report by Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera, 9,851 new employees were recruited to the entire public sector during the first quarter 2018.
The report showed that 7,555 public servants had left the public sector due to retirements, resignations, vacation of post and dismissals, he told a news conference.
The Provincial Councils alone had employed 7,840 in addition to their approved cadre.
This showed the need for all government sector institutions to adopt a National Wages Policy, Karunathileka said.
The Cabinet of Ministers this week had examined the public sector employment data and emphasized that the responsibility of recruiting employees in addition to approved cadrer should be taken by the heads of institutions, he said.
