ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s main prison in the capital Colombo dating back to the British colonial era will be shifted releasing around 50 acres of land for a ‘commercial city’ Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
"Plans have been made to shift the prison to Kaluthara district," Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told reporters.
"A 40-50 acre commercial city will come up in this area."
He said the Megapolis ministry was preparing the groundwork for the project.
Colombo’s Welikdada prison complex spread over 48 acres was built in 1841 by a British colonial administration.
It is now overcrowded. It also has a hospital where the rich and politically connected stay when they are remanded. (Colombo/June18)
