Sri Lanka’s Colombo port container volumes up 16.4-pct in January 2018
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port handled 564,155 containers in January 2018, up 16.4 percent from a year earlier, with transhipment volumes rising 20.4 percent to 436,3030 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs), the state port agency said.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority said its Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) had transhipped 164,252 TEUS, soaring 43.7 percent from 114,282 last year.
SLPA terminals hand handled 194,688 TEUs in January up from 156,010 a year earlier.
China International Container Terminals, operated by CM Ports group and South Asia Gateway Terminals owned by Colombo listed John Keells group operate the other two terminals.
SLPA said Colombo had seen 388 ship calls in January 2018, up 8.1 percent from 339 last year.
There were 332 container ships, up 9.2 percent from 304 last year.
SLPA said container operations at Jaya Container Terminal increased 5.3 percent in October, 8.2 percent in November and 13.9 percent in December.
SLPA said Chairman Parakrama Dissanayake had improved labour relations and improved productivity. (Colombo/Feb19/2018)
