Sri Lanka’s commercial capital Colombo sees steep increase in Covid 19 patients

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Commercial capital the city of Colombo has seen a big jump in Covid cases and the Municipal Health Services are working around the clock to trace, treat and test, its Mayor Rosy Senanayake said.

Before the Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda Fish Market clusters exploded the city had only 132 Covid positive cases but now that number has grown to 1,217 as of yesterday, city officials confirmed.

In all the City has conducted 12,383 PCR tests since mid-March of which the larger percentage has been of “first-line” contacts of confirmed Covid patients. That is a person or persons whom the patient has been in direct contact.

Since the recent outbreak – post the emergence of the Peliyagoda cluster – 5,696 PCR tests have been conducted and a high 35pct have tested positive, Senanayake said.

“We discovered more than a thousand patients in just a week,” Senanayake said.

The Colombo Municipality had a Covid positive staffer last week and 33 people working in the building had been tested.

Senanayake, at the time, warned all Councilors and staff who attended the Finance Committee meeting where the official was also an attendee to get themselves tested by the Municipal Health staff.

Meetings were cancelled and constituents asked to refrain from entering the City Hall building.

City Health Officials discovered two patients in the Port of Colombo and tested dozens of workers there as well officials said.

They were also used to work in the Gampaha area assisting officials dealing with the Minuwangoda cluster of Covid patients.





The Mayor praised her head of Public Health Dr Ruwan Wijayamuni who has been hailed by his peers for doing a great job in the City.

As of this morning, the Gampaha District has seen the largest number of patients as Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda are in it with 2908 patients and Colombo District comes second with 1584.

According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Department of Health Services since October 7, the number of Covid positive patients has nearly tripled from 3,733 to 8,870 as of yesterday an increase of 5,137.
