Sri Lanka’s delayed VAT bill gets court nod
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court has given its approval for the amended Value Added Tax bill clearing the way for a vote debate and a possible vote this week, Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala announced Tuesday.
Sumathipala told the assembly that the Supreme Court informed parliament that the bill was not inconsistent with the constitution. The Rajapaksa faction of the opposition had challnged the VAT bill.
The much delayed, but desperately needed VAT bill is due to be debated on Wednesday. Officials said they expected a vote on the same day. However, if a longer debate is required, a vote would be taken on Thursday.
