Sri Lanka’s scheduled power cuts drop to one hour on August 05

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s daily scheduled power cuts will drop to one hour on Friday August 05, according to the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) though it is not immediately clear whether the outages will return to the usual three hours on Saturday.

According to the state-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the reduction in power cut duration on Friday is due to an increase in hydro power generation thanks to the ongoing southwest monsoon.

All designated areas (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V and W) will have no power on Friday for one hour between 6pm and 9pm.

The CEB said the supply interruption time and restoration time will vary within 30 minutes of the times indicated above.

On Wednesday August 03, the CEB said, 58.59 percent or 21.92 gigawatt hours were generated from hydropower plants while 11.5 GWh or 30.73 percent was generated through thermal power plants.

Due to lack of rainfall, CEB power generation was mainly from thermal power plants and less than 40 percent was generated through hydro power plants until Tuesday August 02. (Colombo/Aug02/2022)
