SriLankan Airlines Presidential commission to probe, fraud, nepotism, current and ex-CEOs
ECONOMYNEXT – President Maithripal Sirisena had appointed a commission of inquiry headed by ex Supreme Court Judge Anil Gooneratne to probe alleged fraud, nepotism, leasing of aircraft, actions of current and former chief exectrives including termination of leases and hiring and firing.
The commission which probe the period of January 2006 to January 31, 2018, has to report its findings in six months.
Ethauda Arachchige Gamini Rohan Amarasekara, Judge of the Court of Appeal, Piyasena Ranasinghe, Retired Judge of the High Court, Mallawaarachchige Don Anthony Harold, Retired Deputy Auditor General, and Wasantha Jayaseeli Kapugama Geeganage, Director General, Sri Lanka Accounting and Standards Monitoring Board would be other members.
The committee will also probe the termination of a management deal with Emirates, its consequences and transactions valued at over million rupees.
It will also probe SriLankan Catering, where another commission of inquiry found questionable procurement, during the period of ex-CEO Kapila Chandrasena, and the setting up of Mihin Lanka by Sajin Vass Gunerawardene an ally of President Rajapaksa and its recent closure.
The period covers the Boards chaired by President Mahindra Rajapaksa’s brother-in-law, Nishantha Wickremesinghe, and current chairman Ajith Dias and current chief executive Suren Ratwatte, who is the brother of an advisor of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The current administration failed to privatize the airline and continued to run losses terminating leases at huge costs creating further controversy.
