Eight homes were damaged by strong winds in Vavuniya yesterday (07), the Vavuniya Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
Two houses in Vavuniya North, four houses in Cheddikulam and another two in Vavuniya South sustained damages in the winds.
DMC Vavuniya District Assistant Director N. Sooriyarajah told RepublicNext that the victims will be compensated following a valuation of the damages caused.
“Minor damages to homes are also reported in Puttalam, Gampaha and Kurunegala areas,” DMC Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said, speaking to RepublicNext.
Meanwhile, issuing a warning this morning, the Meteorology Department said that wind speeds are likely to increase in Northern, North-central, Western, Northwestern and Central provinces and Trincomalee districts, with speeds reaching up to 50-60kmph on occasion.
A sudden increase of wind speeds up to 70kmph is likely in the Northern and Northcentral provinces and in Trincomalee district particularly in the afternoon and later in the night, the Met Department added.
