Supreme Court stops executions until Oct 30

The Supreme Court which today heard 12 Fundamental Rights petitions challenging the death penalty, suspended executions until October 30 this year.

The petitions were filed by a range of people from Human Rights defenders to Civil Society leaders and a variety of religious leaders.

The former Bishop of Colombo Duleep de Chickera, the Director of the Walpola Rahula Institute Ven Galkande Dhammananda Thero and a representative Moulvi from the All Ceylon Jamiayatul Ulema were among the petitioners.
