Garnier Banister Francis the Visa Assistant at the Swiss Embassy who was arrested for bringing disrepute to the government was granted bail by Colombo’s Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today.
She was released on Rs 500,000 bail and two sureties.
A number of bail conditions were imposed on her by the Magistrate.
Her travel ban was extended and Francis was asked to surrender her passport to the court. She was also ordered to inform the court in case she applied for another travel document.
She was also asked to produce a Grama Sevaka certificate to prove her current address and if she does move, she should produce proof of her address.
Francis alleged she had been accosted by armed men who identified themselves as police officers, threatened and held for two hours and forced to disclose Embassy related information. However, under interrogation, she changed some aspects of her initial story and after that, the Attorney General ordered that she be arrested.
