The Colombo Fort police arrested three individuals yesterday (2) at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo for the possession of 600 letters containing hate and defamatory remarks against the president, government and religion.
According to Police Media, the letters were addressed to the chief incumbents of 600 Buddhist temples across the island. The demeanour of the individuals who had arrived with letters addressed to so many temples had raised suspicions, and officials at the Central Mail Exchange had notified the police.
The suspects, aged 24, 28, and 41, are from the Wattegama and Polgolla areas. They have been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) for further investigation.
