Three people are dead and four others injured in a landslide in Nuwara Eliya, after heavy rains continued in many parts of the country, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
According to the DMC’s situation report released this morning, the deaths had occurred in Nuwara Eliya District when rocks accompanied mud and earth as the landslide took place.
A total number of 14,447 people belonging to 4,300 households have been affected yesterday. Likewise, 9 houses have been completely destroyed whilst 270 houses have been partially damaged due to the weather.
Speaking to RepublicNext, Assistant Director of DMC Pradeep Kodippili said that “flood levels in Colombo District has reduced”.
Also, DMC warned this morning all people residing near the Yan Oya to take safety precautions as the water levels have risen to the alert level.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department issued a statement that showery conditions in Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva and Central provinces is expected to continue today after 1:00 PM.
“Heavy falls about 100mm is expected in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Nuwara-Eliya, Badulla and Monaragala district.
As well as fairly heavy showers about 75-100 mm is expected in Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Kaluthara and Colombo, Matale and Kandy districts”, the Met Department said.
