Three injured when police shoot speeding car amid COVID-19 curfew
ECONOMYNEXT – Three persons were injured when police opened fire at a speeding car in Egodauyana last night when it had failed to heed orders to stop, the police media division said.
The incident occurred at the district boundary roadblock near the new bridge in Modara, Egodauyana, amid the ongoing COVID-19 curfew.
Police said officers on duty at the previous roadblock near the Egodauyana Old Galle Road had signalled the car heading towards Panadura to stop but it had sped on regardless.
They had then informed the police officers stationed at the new bridge, but the car had again failed to heed orders, at which point the cops opened fire.
Despite being shot at, police said, the car had shot past the road-block set up just after the bridge by the Panadura South Police.
The car was subsequently found parked near the Base Hospital in Panadura. Three passengers had sustained injuries and one of them was transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo for further treatment.
The driver of the car and the injured passengers have been placed under arrest, police said. They are currently receiving treatment under police security.
Egodauyana Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (Colombo/Apr3/2020)
