Three women die in stampede at aid distribution in Colombo
ECONOMYNEXT – At least three people are dead and several injured after a stampede when private donors were distributing cash to the needy in the Maligawatte area in Central Colombo, Police said.
The Police spokesman was quoted as saying six people have been arrested for organizing the aid distribution.
Reports said the incident took place at a private residence on Jumma Masjid Road in Maligawatte.
The donors had been distributing cash when there was a stampede.
Police spokesman Superintendent of Police Jaliya Senaratne told media that the Maligawatte police are investigated the incident.
He described the deceased persons as “elderly women.”
An unknown number of people had been rushed to the National Hospital in Colombo and at least nine of them remain warded, reports said. (Colombo, May 21, 2020)
