Top cop faces arrest over Sri Lanka double murder
ECONOMYNEXT – The senior-most police officer in the southern province is likely to be questioned and arrested over the killing of two people by a special unit directly under his command, official sources said Tuesday.
Senior Deputy Inspector-General Ravi Wijegunawardena has already been transferred to police headquarters, pending an investigation into last month’s abduction and murder of two businessmen from Ratgama.
Relatives complained that the two men were abducted from their homes on January 23 by men believed to be police officers. The motive for the abduction was not immediately clear.
However, it has been established that a 20-member team directly under the Senior DIG had carried out the abduction which brought back fears of the dreaded white-van kidnappings associated with former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Chilling details have emerged of how the two men were tortured and killed by police. Official sources said investigators were trying to trace the remains of the two victims. An inspector has already been arrested and is being questioned.
Investigators are trying to find out if the Senior DIG had a direct role in the killings, but initially he is suspected of aiding a cover up. (COLOMBO, February 19, 2019 – SB)
