ECONOMYNEXT – Top Sri Lankan economist and the head of the Institute of Policy Studies, Saman Kelegama, has died in Thailand, official sources said.
Kelegama was due to travel back home Friday but Sri Lankans who were due to fly back with him raised the alarm when he did not show up at the airport.
Later, the authorities found him dead in his hotel room. The cause of death was not immediately known.
“When they went to his room, there was a ‘do not disturb’ sign. They opened the door to find him dead,” an official in contact with the Sri Lankan embassy in Thailand said.
Kelegama was a key figure driving the government’s international trade policy. He was Executive Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, a state connected think tank.
