Total from Minuwangoda Covid cluster goes up to 1,028 including a possible death
ECONOMYNEXT – Doctors in the Gampaha area are investigating whether a 64-year old woman from Yakkala, who died minutes after she was admitted to the Galkanda Quarantine Centre today succumbed to the virus.
The spokesman for the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of Covid 19 Col Vijitha Hettiarachchi said that a swab has been taken from the deceased woman and a post mortem examination is being conducted.
“Doctors suspect that she died due to Covid as her daughter has tested Covid positive,” he added.
By this evening another 6 positive cases were reported from Ratnapura, Kandy and Mulleriyawa bringing the country total for today to 207, and the cluster total to 1028, NOCPOC said.
Five of the new cases are employees of the Brandix factory in Minuwangoda and the sixth is a close associate.
Up to now, Minuwangoda has been the biggest Covid cluster the country has had and there is still no indication whether this infection has come from the community or not.
Yesterday a senior doctor at the Medical Research Institute said the virus has been in the community since January although the government has insisted there are no cases coming from inside the country.
