Two suspects who had allegedly made threatening phone calls demanding money from residents in Hanwella and Nawagamuwa areas was arrested by the Mirihana Special Crime Division yesterday (24).
According to police, the two suspects had been making phone calls to landlines in homes threatening people asking for ransom money to be either deposited in bank accounts or transferred via the eZ-cash electronic payment system.
After a long investigation by the special crimes division of the Mirihana Police, they were able to arrest one of the suspects who had made the phone calls and the other who had assisted him.
The two suspects hail from the Polpithigama area and are aged 31 and 44, police said.
Mirihana Police is carrying out further investigations.
