UK’s Gemfields Plc builds Sri Lanka supply network
ECONOMYNEXT – Gemfields Plc, a UK-based coloured gemstone firm, said it had added Sri Lanka to its supply chain, building links with several gem and mining enterprises in the island.
The firm says it is a "responsibly sourced" supplier.
"Sri Lanka is already world renowned for the quality of its gemstones and we are confident that our proven expertise will augment the established market there, benefitting the local mining community and the Sri Lankan gemstone industry as a whole," Gemfields Chief Executive Ian Harebottle said in a statement.
Among the selected suppiiers are Ashkar Gems, Weslow Gems and Diamonds, Mushan Gems and Lapidary, SGH Gems (Supreme Global Holdings), and Ceylon Facets.
Gemfields Plc, which said it was quoted on London’s AIMS market, said it had set up a Sri Lanka unit, Ratnapura Lanka Gemstones Pvt Ltd (RLGPL).
Director of Weslow Gems and Diamonds Gamini Wettasinghe from Balangoda, an area famed for its gems, a 30-year veteran in the industry said the partnership with Gemfields will result in stronger demand and better prices for small players. (Colombo/Nov09/2016)
